PROGRAM
TALKS POSTERS

Description

The Bay Area Scientific Computing Day (BASCD) is an informal gathering to encourage the interaction and collaboration of researchers in the field of computational science and engineering from the San Francisco Bay Area. This event provides a great venue for junior researchers to present their work to the local community, and for the Bay Area scientific and computational science communities at large to interchange views on today's multidisciplinary computational challenges and state-of-the-art developments.

The Bay Area Scientific Computing Day grew out of an informal arrangement between Stanford University and UC, Berkeley that began in the late 1980's. Each February those interested in scientific computing at each institution, graduate students and faculty, gathered together for a one day meeting on a Saturday. The site alternated between the two campuses and the day ended with dinner at a local restaurant. At these gatherings were researchers from NASA Ames, Hewlett-Packard, Lawrence Labs at Berkeley and Livermore, Sandia Lab, and other places. As traffic increased in the Bay Area the drive between Berkeley and Stanford became more and more unpleasant and attendance at the weekly seminars at the other institution became less and less attractive. To some degree these annual meetings compensated for traffic deterrent.

This year's BASCD is the fifth one following a series of four successful events: The Fifth BASCD will include 10 technical talks, a 60-minute round table discussion, and 10 contributed poster presentations.

Logistics

The Fifth BASCD is sponsored by and held at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Directions to LBNL campus can be found here.

The meeting will take place in the auditorium in Building 66. Access to LBNL will be granted only through the Blackberry Canyon gate (the Northwest Entrance on Cyclotron Road). At this gate, registered attendees will be asked to provide a valid California or US identification card. Also, at the gate you will receive directions to Building 66 and information about parking. A map of the LBNL's campus can be found here.

The meeting will start with a complimentary continental breakfast and registration at 8:15 AM that will be followed by the first technical session starting at 9:00 AM. To encourage networking and interactions, a complimentary lunch will also be provided at 12:30 PM. We will resume the afternoon technical session at 2:00 PM. Posters will be on display throughout the day and attendees will be able to visit them during the morning and afternoon coffee breaks as well as during the lunch. This year's technical program will conclude with a 60-minutes round table discussion on relevant issues on Computational Sciences that include graduate education, outreach and integration of emerging fields in computational sciences.

The BASCD will end at 5:30 PM, followed by a banquet dinner at the Hong Kong East Ocean Reastaurant, in Emeryville. The cost will be $ 30.00 per person (gratuity and tax included). If you are planning to attend this banquet please indicate so when completing your on-line registration.

Lastly, there will be no on-site or off-site LBNL shuttle services, so attendees are encouraged to carpool to LBNL.

Registration

Due to tightened security, registration prior to March 10, 2004 is mandatory for all participants in this event.
